Our library was built in 1999 and we've reduced study space recently because other units on campus coveted our newish space after a study discovered we weren't "using," our abundance square footage--we were colonized. The upside is we finally got the cafe/coffee shop we lobbied for since I started working here in 2000. Naturally, students want our library open 24/7, but we don't have funds to keep the doors open that long. Popular platforms pushed by those running for SGA are "keep the library open 24/7." And, we've discussed (in our faculty meetings) the idea of a student-assessed library fee that might pay for an annual staff position to implement this service, but we haven't taken it public to students or administration; just not sure either will go for it. Our student body, now surging @ 15K, is formerly commuter and transitioning into more residential, and we think that's the reason for the emphasis on extended library hours now.
