We've had a few thefts in the library recently and students complaining about the lack of extra security beyond signs warning them not to leave their belongings lying around. We do what we can with rounds, but we don't have the staff to check everyone at the door and students will leave their stuff laying around. The thing is, if people feel safe in a library they're liable to behave irresponsibly with their belongings. And that creates an opportunity for theft - not just by outsiders, either, since students aren't all perfect citizens. Marketing the safety of the library may create liability issues for aspects of safety you really can't control.
